National Pig Day

March 1st is National Pig Day.  It's said the holiday was
started in 1972 by two sisters who felt the pig ought to be appreciated for being
one of man's most domesticated and intellectual animals.

Some people have them as household pets and train them.
In 1772 Dublin, a pig was trained to count and perform other
tricks to entertain as a street performer.
We had a bunch of pigs on our farm when I was a girl, and
my favorite was a black one who would come up and
drink directly from the hose when we filled the water trough each day.

And who doesn't love Wilbur, Piglet, Toot & Puddle?
Four of the greatest storybook pig characters of all time, I think.
