Apples, Hercules, and Puritans
I've had a consistent apple theme this year with sketch prompts,
articles I've come across, and books I've read.
They are my favorite fruit, so it caught my attention.
I joined a "sketch a day" app and the prompt was "weight
and I chose a bushel of apples.
I rearranged the artwork a bit to make the card above.
I just finished reading "The Invisible Hour" by Alice Hoffman
and she writes about "Look No Further" apples that were
discovered in Westfield, Mass. in the 1700s.
One of my favorite lines in the book is,
"The Puritans believed that women should be subjugated
because Eve ate of the apple, committing original sin.
You should eat an apple every day to spite
the idiots who thought so."
Some more apple references I've come across
this year are the
Apples of Hesperides, golden apples said to grant immortality
these apples. He tricked Atlas into getting them
while Hercules held up the sky.
He then tricked Atlas again into taking the
weight of the sky back, as it isn't his burden to bear.
Lastly, the judgement of the Trojan Prince Paris
who is to award a golden apple to the fairest
between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
He chose Aphrodite so he could have Helen
which started the Trojan war. . .
A sketch of one of the apples from my son's tree.
I read the Pulitzer Prize runner up book "North Woods"
and it referenced an apple orchard
a really creative story that takes place in one house
over generations.
So, A is for apple, symbolizing
Adam and Eve, Garden of Eden,
Hearts, love, new beginnings.
Keeping the doctor away.
Gift for teachers.
Choose from Gala (my favorite), Envy, Honeycrisp,
many more.
