Squirrel Appreciation Day

Squirrel Appreciation Day is on January 21 of each year

to celebrate the cutest rodent in the world. 

It was started in 2001 by Christy Hargrove, a North Carolina

wildlife rehabilitator.  There are over 200 species of squirrels

with ground squirrels being labeled as the destructive pests

of the bunch.  The oldest type is the nocturnal arrow flying squirrel

who was first added to the list in 1766. 

The squirrel in the photo lives (or was living when I took the photo)

in the rocks at the Legends Marina in Sparks, NV.
