Basil and Bachelor Buttons

Common basil means hate in the Language of Flowers. I was curious
about this and the only thing I could find was the Greeks and Romans believed
they needed to rant with insults and curses while they were sowing the seed.
The Romans considered it a magical plant sacred to Venus.

Bachelor Buttons symbolize single blessedness, hope in love, delicacy,
purity of feelings, and good fortune.  The flower has several different names and Bachelor Button may come from the Victorian era. Single men
would put a bloom in a button hole to let the ladies know they were available.
These flowers grew wild in fields of corn in Europe and became
known as cornflowers.
Cyanus is a Greek word for dark blue. Cyanus in mythology loved
Cornflowers and died on a bed of them, so the goddess Flora named
the flower after him.
