Lake Shore Bird Sketches

Last Saturday I went to Virginia Lake to sketch the shore birds.
I spent the morning sketching and observing the birds.  I was surprised at how much the ducks remind me of cats.  They curl themselves up to sleep, tuck their beaks into their feathers, exhale deeply and rest.  While I was there most of the ducks were curled up even with children there throwing nice chunks of bread. The geese were happy though.

I watched the pigeons for a while.  High energy birds.  I liked their feather patterns.  Easily startled and fly away in a group and swoop back over their area resting and exploring again.

I liked this unique bird shaped like a penguin.  I'll have to investigate what kind he is.
I made the sketches into a pattern to put on items in my Zazzle shop.  Tote bags are one of my favorite items to design.  You can click here to see it in my shop.

These all over print tank tops are new this year too.

And a fleece blanket.  Nice for the colder months approaching.

Austin Nevada and Jacobsville

Last weekend we visited Jacobsville near Austin, Nevada.  I painted some
different views of the landscape playing with color.

From where I was sitting there was a home with various outbuildings and such.  I simplified the scene for my drawing.  Simplified it a lot and added the little bird.  I did see quite a few birds, skittish cows, Peter cottontails and chukar or maybe grouse birds, not sure.

A view looking down into the valley toward Austin from Mt. Airy.

We arrived around 9 and so I still had some fairly nice light to take photos.    I liked the shapes in the barb wire and the view of the desert beyond.

This one I was working with framing the cattle inside the fence borders while capturing the rabbit brush since it was in nice contrast to the mountains and sky.   Leading lines with the fence.  Remembered a few composition techniques for this one.

I'm not sure what these birds are, maybe chukar or grouse.  They are large and gray.  Not in focus, but I liked their wingspan.

Yellow Hot Air Balloon Watercolor and Paddleboard Dog

Painting at Pope Beach Lake Tahoe there was a bright yellow hot air balloon with orange tulips at the base floating around the lake.
Nice color contrast to the blue lake and fun to paint.

Lots of boating activity on the lake, but very few sailboats.
Lots and lots of kayaks in the water.

A neat stick and twig structure someone built.  Fun to take photos.
A father told his kids to pose "in the castle" to take a photo.  They loved it.

A woman paddleboarding with her dog.  Peaceful and fun.

Tahoe Keys Wooden Boat Show

Last weekend was the wooden boat show at South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Keys.

Beautiful boats that look so elegant in the water.

I liked the sun sparkle off of the top of the boats and their different lengths making an interesting line looking out.

I liked this ZZ Top inspired guy.  Neat shirt.
