Gabbs Nevada Road Trip

Our road trip last weekend was toward Gabbs, Nevada.  We turned off on a couple of dirt roads to look around.  I don't see cactus too often in the desert, so this was a nice surprise.  I still had a little nice morning light when we arrived.

I've come to like the patterns and prickly nature of the desert plants I see.  They give off good reflections.  This was at a mining site and there were pipes here and there, metal things scattered about and this great red pipe in the ground.  Some color!

I found this old car kind of a ditch and I could get down to it.  The light reflections were really nice on it.  So much of it was metal, which was nice.  No plastic.

I thought maybe the car was a Plymouth at first, but see the name begins with a D, so not sure.

I liked this page from a magazine. It talks about change.  I like exploring these areas in the desert.  A lot of times it's like people just decide it's time to go, leave everything but absolute necessities and move on.

A slanted cabin still upright, but maybe not for long.  We sat in the truck for a bit before getting out to explore this area listening to Janis Joplin sing "Me and Bobby McGee".  I sat next to a guy at a 21 table the other evening who said he'd seen Janis in concert once.  I thought that was neat.

The top of the cabin.  I liked the shadows and the view of the desert in the distance.

There was an old Kenmore stove with everything metal and pink paint.  I loved the dial on the top.  Every surface that's metal has bullet holes in it out in the desert.  There's always a little fire pit close by and beer cans left by the happy shooters.

And someone left a smiley face on a hill.  Thought I'd end my post with that.  Hope you have a good weekend.

Winter Walk At The Lake

I've been working on paintings lately.  I get comfortable with my sketchbook style art and small illustrations.  This painting is of the south shore of Lake Tahoe.  I bought an Ebook from Elizabeth Tyler on painting.  She paints beautifully and has written a wonderful book with great information and lots of her paintings in it.  She's from Sweden and travels on her boat a lot so her paintings are different from what I'm used to seeing and it's a nice change.

Last weekend we drove out toward the Gabbs area and explored.  This is my sketchbook page for the day. I have some photos too I'll post soon.  Nice day.  It's been like spring here.

Elephant Mixed Media Painting Fallon ArtSeeds

I went to a dinner and painting workshop hosted by Fallon ArtSeeds over the weekend.
The painting above was the base coat.  This project had lots and lots of layers.  We chose three colors to use plus white.

We continued building up layers and more layers of shapes and words using stencils, stamps and other tools like toilet paper rolls and bubble wrap.

Several more layers later this is my final painting.  We used a black oil type stick to draw on the shape we wanted and smear it a bit with our fingers.  Then put in the complimentary color around the shape to make it stand out more.  Very fun evening and great dinner at the Maine Street Cafe.

Daisy Bird Watercolor Painting

My painting for today.  I started it yesterday and finished it today.  I have a bouquet of daisies and wanted to paint them and added the bird for a little more interest.

Sparks Marina Sunday Photo Walk

We walked around Sparks Marina on Sunday.   I subscribe to the blog of photographer Anne McKinnell and she sent out a tutorial on photographing small animals.  I thought the marina would be a good place to find some.  And I found some.  Lots of chubby squirrels.  And a nice variety of ducks and geese.

The morning light was nice.  A little drab at times when the sun was behind the clouds, but nice and soft when it came out.  Calm water for nice reflections.

I love colorful beach front homes and the bright water toys out front.

I liked the shape of the bridge and being able to capture the reflections in the water.  The marina is a nice walk of a little over two miles.  It's kept really nice and clean by maintenance man Mike, who does a great job and is friendly too.

Verdi Bull Sketchbook Project

Going through my photos I took last year I decided to sketch this bull I saw in a pasture in Verdi last summer.  He seemed to be a peaceful guy and I kept my distance.

Sketchbook Project Lake Tahoe Geese

A sketch of the sometimes friendly geese on the south shore of Lake Tahoe.  Friendly if you have food, I guess.

15% off Spoonflower Fabrics through February!

Great news!  Spoonflower is having 15% off their fabrics through the month of February.
They have a great selection of different fabric styles to choose from now also.
Here's a link to my shop Country Garden at Spoonflower

If you order some fabric swatches to test them out here are some ideas for things to make with the swatches.  Handy items, especially if you do craft shows.

Spoonflower's newest fabric is the cotton spandex jersey and it is wonderful.  I think it would make a very comfortable shirt, summer dress or even pajamas.

Here's a sample of the cotton spandex jersey I bought.

Sketchbook Project My Cat in the Garden

I read a lot about projects people do, especially with photography, to keep their skills up and have a yearly record of what they do and progress.  I bought a new sketchbook a few months ago and decided today to begin a project like that.  I want to use my own photographs for reference to draw from.  This is a combination of two photographs. One of my garden years ago in Winnemucca and one of our cat in the garden here in Fallon. Our cat is now gone, but I'm so glad we took lots of pictures of him.  Funny cat and I miss him.

Desert January Snow and Meadowlarks

A nice snowstorm came through the area last weekend.  I think the desert looks great in snow.  My husband and I took a drive toward Lovelock.

We were hoping to see some wildlife and found a handful of antelope on our way back.

Just outside of Lovelock.  I liked the muted colors of the stormy day.

The graffiti looked interesting to me.

I finished my meadowlark painting yesterday and made cards with it in my
